The ‘Follow/Unfollow’ Game Is Kind Of Cruel

You’ve played this game before, right?

Okay, maybe you haven’t – and if you haven’t, that’s awesome. I guarantee that you’ve noticed this game though.

I find that it happens on Instagram a lot. I call it the “follow/unfollow game”.

It happens when you notice that a “bigger” account starts following you (or maybe not necessarily “bigger”, but one that you admire) and after communicating with them – they disappear. They’ve unfollowed you. You might even take it so far as to ask why they’ve stopped following you.

Are we doing this because of instant gratification? Are we unfollowing because we’re not entertained as fast as we want to be? I cannot figure out why this is a thing! But, it’s definitely a thing.

You see, following and unfollowing so quickly kind of makes it seem like you weren’t that sure you wanted to follow that person in the first place. It’s almost like you’re not sure who you are as a brand. Secondly, it kind of makes you seem flighty or finicky.

It’s just not a good idea.

Do you do this? Has it happened to you?
