New year, new me. We’ve heard that thousands of times already, right?
Yeah – sometimes I roll my eyes at those posts too. I have to admit the idea behind those posts is noble. Who doesn’t like the idea of a fresh start? I just had a sucky 2018 – and I’m probably still bitter.
To pull myself out of that mindset, I decided to write a letter to myself that I hope will resonate with you as well.
Let’s begin…
Dear 2019,
We just met. As in any new relationship, we’re going to come across some bumps on the road. I’ll be the first to admit that one of them will be my bitterness from last year. I’m working on letting that go.
With you, I want to remain optimistic. With you, I want to enjoy happiness, travel, and an appreciation for the simple parts of life we often take for granted. I was too busy and too concerned with my former career to notice those. This past holiday break, I literally relaxed and did little else but hang out with my husband and cat at home. I forgot how nice it was to do just that. I forgot how nice it was to make those moments your sole focus.
It’s my hope that you’ll treat me with the same respect I’m working on giving to myself. My journey to self care, and minding my mental health is not over yet. I hope you’ll help me refine it.
We don’t have much time together. Let’s make the most of it.
